This handsome and rare LP – an unplayed copy* with the “golden band” – from RCA (LSC-2272, US pressing, shaded dog label, stereo, original inner sleeve included) feature Jean Martinon and l’Orchestre de Ia Société des Concerts du Conservatoire’s brilliant account of Prokofiev’s Symphonies No. 5 in B-flat Major Op. 100, recorded in the warm acoustics of the Maison de la Mutualité, Paris, during 25 and 28-29 October 1957.
Lean, lithe, and balletic, and utterly potent, Martinon’s Fifth is the perfect antidote to the heavy Mahlerian tread many latter day maestros have tried to impose upon Prokofiev’s score.
This album was recorded by the Decca team of Michael Williamson (producer) and Ken Cress (engineer). There are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Alfred Frankenstein, printed in English only. The colorful cover art is uncredited, alas.
*Note: Although this copy is not sealed in cellophane, it is wrapped in an unbroken RCA Victor “golden band” (similar in style to a Japanese Obi). It is an unplayed copy.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the album appears almost as new. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other faults, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is near-MINT. Although this is an unplayed copy, I am grading it as NM (vs. MINT) to be on the safe side. A beautiful copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
