Description
You have a unique opportunity to purchase probably the very first copy of the legendary jazz recording issued later by Tampa Records with the catalogue number TP28 “Marty Paich Quartet Featuring Art Pepper “. First pressings of this great session on vinyl with Art Pepper in his best form achieve prices up to 2000$ (especially on red vinyl) being very rare and desirable jazz collector items.
The record offered in this auction is an acetate / dubplate, genuine test pressing issued in July 1956 (not for sale) one month before the first official release on vinyl for sale (August 1956).
I will not apply grading standard applicable to vinyl records as the acetate manufacturing technology is different and such records were not manufactured for commercial reasons (simple, unprinted jacket and labels, hand written titles...). Acetate material was used to press single copies of recordings before the development and use of high volume pressing on vinyl started. The material was sensitive and required very careful handling in order to prevent damages to playing surfaces.
The record has a very wide flat edge, is heavy, very shiny and does not have any handling marks (scratches) which indicate it has been played seldom and well taken care of. However at the beginning of each side (1st tracks and beginning of 2nd tracks) there are micro cracks of the acetate surface which were most probably caused by improper cooling process after its fabrication. Those micro cracks (please look at the photo I have attached to the listing) are not feelable but they negatively impact the ability of the record player needle to track properly along the grooves and would most probably (depending on the stylus type and weight of the tonearm) cause skips and sticks (repetitions) making the first tracks not really playable. The other tracks of the record play well through with some tics.
The jacket is in good shape with clear tape on edges and hand written titles, musicians’ names, date and place of the recording.
All in all this record is not for audiophile but for jazz lovers and vintage record collectors willing to own a unique part of jazz history.
