Berry Gordy started Motown in January 1959 with a loan from his family. Originally calling his label Tamla Records, Gordy released "Come To Me" by Marv Johnson as his first single. He later changed the label's name to Motown Records, after Detroit's nickname the "Motor City.".
Mega rare 1st Motown single release 1959 "Come To Me" 45 by Marv Johnson. This rare one is from the first batch (without the Gladstone address line), that Berry Gordy picked up at the pressing plant and drove back in a snowstorm to his office. This 45 was the single that stared it all for Motown. Tamla went from being the main label to being renamed Motown Records, with Tamla, Gordy and VIP as sister labels. After Marv Johnson, came The Miracles, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Jackson 5 and so many more great artists. This 45 is in VG+ condition. Nice sound, some wear, name stamped on A side label, no skips. Very clean Tamla co. Sleeve included (see photos).
