WHAT IS AN "ACETATE"?
I guess the best way to explain it would be like this: having an acetate for a song is almost like having the "negatives" for a photo. Acetates are extremely rare, and in some cases, are one-of-a-kind. An acetate disc is cut prior to the cutting of the master disc which will be sent off to the pressing plant where mass production of retail copies begin. The reference disc (or "acetate") allows the artist, producer, engineer, and other interested parties to check the quality of the tape-to-disc recording process and make any necessary changes to ensure that the audio fidelity of the master disc will be as close as possible to that of the original master tape. Even though referred to as an "acetate", it is essentially an aluminium disc coated with a fine film of nitro-celluolose lacquer with no acetate in it at all!
The surface is softer than vinyl, there is little to no background noise, and when it is played the sound is as close to the master tape as you will ever get.
So if you have an "acetate", you have a disc that was theoretically cut for the producer, engineer and artist to listen to.
Some acetate records have different mixes of a recording, rather than the released version. If you have a commercially-issued version of the recording on hand, you may want to compare the two records to see how they differ. The alternate version may be one-of-a-kind, and the value is much higher than simply a released version on an acetate record. Acetates are rare enough anyway, though, as there are usually ten or fewer copies made of them.
Due to their rarity, some acetates can command high prices at auction. Brian Epstein's collection of Beatles acetates fetched between $1,000 and $10,000 per disc. An acetate from The Velvet Underground, containing music that would later appear on their first album, The Velvet Underground & Nico, sold on eBay in 2006 for $25,200.
In the year 2000, Michael Jackson wrote a column for Beliefnet titled, "My Childhood, My Sabbath, My Freedom" : "What I wanted more than anything was to be ordinary. The Sabbath was when I could be." The article was not written as some kind of promotional propaganda, but was written at the behest of his friend, Rabbi Shmuley. The article was a series written for Beliefnet on the importance of Sabbath from the viewpoint of artists, writers and thinkers. Jackson's article shows us again, a side of the child star that we often didn't hear about and as many stood in awe, sometimes confusion at the star's choices of dress and lifestyle, the thing most often forgotten was his humanity. In Jackson's article the most moving theme that comes across is not that he had faith, but that his greatest desire was to be "ordinary." In his own words, Michael Jackson writes why the Sabbath was important to him:
"There was one day a week, however, that I was able to escape the stages of Hollywood and the crowds of the concert hall. That day was the Sabbath. In all religions, the Sabbath is a day that allows and requires the faithful to step away from the everyday and focus on the exceptional. I learned something about the Jewish Sabbath in particular early on from Rose, and my friend Shmuley further clarified for me how, on the Jewish Sabbath, the everyday life tasks of cooking dinner, grocery shopping, and mowing the lawn are forbidden so that humanity may make the ordinary extraordinary and the natural miraculous. Even things like shopping or turning on lights are forbidden. On this day, the Sabbath, everyone in the world gets to stop being ordinary. But what I wanted more than anything was to be ordinary. So, in my world, the Sabbath was the day I was able to step away from my unique life and glimpse the everyday....When circumstances made it increasingly complex for me to attend, I was comforted by the belief that God exists in my heart, and in music and in beauty, not only in a building. But I still miss the sense of community that I felt there--I miss the friends and the people who treated me like I was simply one of them. Simply human. Sharing a day with God."
Jackson shows us in his article a glimpse of a truth often forgotten and that is that somehow, the ordinary is sacred. The ordinary life so often taken for granted (especially in the lives of privileged Americans), is one full of blessing and miracle. Even the large part of worship in liturgical churches is called "The Ordinary" (Ordo Missae) and is seen as a celebration of life and a confirmation of Spirit and God in what is often regarded the "hum drum." So many people dream of fame, not understanding the toll it takes on a human being. Rarely do you hear a person dream of being "ordinary" and yet, in his article Jackson shows us a glimpse of what he sees as beautiful and that beauty is neither fame or glitter, but the ordinary.
Teddy Riley on recording ”Keep The Faith” : "I really admire the work that went into this track. Anything Michael does, I can admire. It doesn't really remind you of any of his other songs; this one's a bit different to his usual tracks but it stands out. Michael's always innovative. With this track, I just think he went another way due to the structure of the track and the instruments used. Well, that and him working with Glen Ballard with the writing on it – they kind of went head-on with that track."
