redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and elusive 9LP box set from Philips (6747 135, French pressing, red/white labels, stereo, booklet included) features Kurt Masur and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig’s complete Beethoven Symphony cycle, as well as these same forces’ accounts of nearly all the Overtures, recorded in Philips’ finest analog sound – open, warm, and rich. Masur’s cycle was made in cooperation with VEB Deutsche Schallplatten, Berlin and was set down over a 2-year span, beginning in February 1972 and ending in January 1974.
At one time, Masur and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra’s recording of Beethoven’s Fourth was Rosette winner (a) in The Penguin Guide. Speaking of the entire cycle, its erudite authors wrote:
“Kurt Masur's earlier anologue Beethoven cycle has much to recommend it in its natural, unforced expressiveness and finely disciplined playing. The Eroica is exceptionally fine, particularly its nobly paced slow movement, and in the Fourth Symphony Masur is marvellously alert.”
------------------------------
And wrote the excellent critic Robert McColley for Fanfare:
“What distinguishes this reissue is the quality of Kurt Masur’s interpretations, always faithful to the letter and spirit of Beethoven’s scores, free of eccentricity, and completely engaging. Playful and robust in the more classical scores of the First, Second, Fourth, and Eighth; heroic and solemn by turns in the “Eroica” and the Fifth; poetic in the “Pastorale”; vivacious in the Seventh; and masterful in changing moods in the Ninth…The orchestra is both disciplined and responsive, and soloists and chorus in the Ninth are as good as any you are likely to hear.”

CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is VERY GOOD. There is light edgewear and shelfwear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, corners breaks, owners' markings, bends, or other defects and the whole remains extremely solid, bright, and attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the 20-page full-size booklet is EXCELLENT. It betrays a bit of handling, but that is all – a fine copy.
The condition of the 9 LPs is EXCELLENT throughout. Though surfaces are not absolutely silent, really these are fine copies and playback is superb. Those requiring flawless or near-MINT copies are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, these are excellent collector's copies.
