Mat Mathews, born Mathieu Hubert Wijnandts Schwarts (June 18, 1924 – February 12, 2009), was a Dutch jazz accordionist.

Mathews was born in The Hague and learned to play accordion while the Netherlands was under Nazi rule during World War II. After hearing Joe Mooney on a radio broadcast after the war, he decided to begin playing jazz. From 1947 to 1950 he played with The Millers in Holland, and then moved to New York City in 1952. He formed a quartet there which included Herbie Mann; he also played with Art Farmer, Julius Watkins, Joe Puma, Oscar Pettiford, Gigi Gryce, Dick Katz, Percy Heath, and Kenny Clarke. He played with Carmen McRae in 1954-55. In 1956 he played in the group The 4 Most with Al Cohn, Gene Quill, Hank Jones and Mundell Lowe.

Later in the 1950s and into the 1960s he worked primarily as a studio musician, and in 1964 he moved back to the Netherlands. There he continued work in studios as an arranger and producer, and recorded less as a player.

Grading Information

M = Mint

Absolutely perfect in every way. Certainly never been played, possibly even still sealed

NM = Near Mint

The record should show no obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. No cut-out holes, either. Of course, the same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves and the like. Basically, an LP in near mint (NM) condition looks as if you just purchased it from a record store.

Very Good Plus

VG+ = Very Good Plus Generally worth 50 percent of the Near Mint value. A Very Good Plus (VG+) record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. Slight warps that do not affect the sound (DNAP) are "OK". The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play. In general, if not for a couple things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint. All but the most mint-crazy collectors will find a Very Good Plus (VG+) record highly acceptable.

VG = Very Good

Generally worth 25 percent of Near Mint value. Many of the defects found in a VG+ (Very Good Plus) record will be more pronounced in a VG (Very Good) disc. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound. Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers.

G = Good

Generally worth 10-15 percent of the Near Mint value. Good does not mean Bad! A record in Good (G) condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear (on a styrene record, the groove will be starting to turn white). A cover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object.

All records are mechanically washed and vacuumed to insure great sound quality.

We are not perfect and mistakes happen occasionally. If you get what you feel is a mis-graded record, please email us and let us know so the issue can be resolved. We will always work to resole any legitimate issues in a prompt, courteous and professional manner.

Packaging Information

Each disc is shipped in a brand new paper sleeve. The cover is placed in a brand new plastic protective sleeve (excluding box sets) to insure that it arrives safely along with the disc outside of the cover to eliminate seam splits during shipping. Sealed LP's are always shipped intact and unopened.

All LP's are shipped in a sturdy new mailer designed specifically for shipping records with one heavy cardboard insert to help prevent bending. Additional padding may be added at $.30 per pad. Please let us know if you require additional padding. This does not mean that they are bullet proof and at times the postal service can and will break things. When this happens you need to contact your local post office.

We cannot be responsible for lost or stolen articles that have shipped. Once they leave our hands they are at the mercy of the postal system.
