 I am not a record dealer, just someone who has accumulated a large collection of vinyl in the 1970s and to a certain extent in the 1980s, and now has (sadly) to let my old 'friends' go to new homes (age and inevitable decay- me, not the records).

 

 After leaving Soft Machine (or asked to leave, he said), Robert Wyatt formed Matching Mole (cf. the French for ‘soft machine’ is ‘machine moule’-clever, hu?). Musically it was the direction he was wanting to go, and, to be fair, not that of the Softs. It is manifestly a ‘Canterbury’ sound but difficult to pigeon-hole precisely. As well as smarting from the departure from the Softs, he was also grieving for the ending of his love affair with the music journalist, Caroline Coon, and this is well represented in the music here.

 

 I am not an expert on the grading of records, but I do know that 'Mint' and 'near-Mint' are, for all practical purposes, meaningless. Who buys a record and then never plays it? The copy  I have is not a first pressing, but does have the same matrix numbers as one. I bought this about 1976, and so I think it is a re-press from that time, although ‘Discogs' does not carry this info. The label is all wrong for a 1st press, as it is the ‘sunrise’ orange CBS label, with the ‘pac-man’ ‘C’ in ‘CBS’. The cover is in VG+ condition, with a little wrinkle in the front, top-left, and a little faint ‘foxing’. The vinyl has no marks or blemishes on visual inspection, and on playback has very little in the way of ticks and tocks, so I would rate it as VG+

 

Please remember that I played these records because I loved the music; I did not buy them as future Collectors’ items or exercises in Hi-Fi navel-gazing. I always took good care of them, however, kept them in vinyl sleeves, and in cases, but even then, some wear is an inevitability.
