️ About This Release

Secret Life is one of the key archival releases from Material, the boundary-pushing collective led by bassist and producer Bill Laswell. Released by Jungle Records in 1986, this double LP gathers together the group's influential early recordings originally issued on Red Records.

Blending avant-garde jazz, post-punk experimentation, funk grooves, dub textures, and early electronic soundscapes, Material occupied a unique position in the underground music world. Their work would go on to influence artists across genres ranging from industrial and electronic music to jazz fusion and alternative rock.

This compilation features performances and production work associated with Bill Laswell, Michael Beinhorn, Martin Bisi, Robert Quine, Fred Maher, and other notable figures from New York's fertile downtown experimental scene.
