Ultra-rare lp of wonderfully extreme experimental conceptual music for trombones performed by Die Gruppe Brass Art; a beautiful unplayed copy of an album virtually impossible to find in any condition. Kagel's Atem has been recorded elsewhere as a solo piece, but this recording is unique as it features multiple performers and was directed by the composer as a special "radio play version of a scenic interpretation." This radical music theater work features the sounds of the opening and closing of trombone cases, the dismantling and polishing of the instruments, and absurd screaming, muttering, and grumbling, in addition to actual trombone sounds. The Globokar work has one of the performers reading an entire text (through the trombone!) on the theoretical relationships between trombone playing and speech. Many of these compositions make use of a mute to create percussive noises, and have the players blow without tone in an attempt to reproduce electronic white noise or sing while simultaneously playing to transform the instrument into a polyphonic one (with interesting sonic interactions between the two tones). The Brass Art group consists of Wolfgang Konig, Bernt Laukamp, Richard Lister, Peter Sommer, and Leo Verheyen. This highly recommended record is definitely the wildest experimental trombone recording I've ever come across, and should be checked out by fans of Folke Rabe, Stuart Dempster, John Swallow, Andre Smith, James Fulkerson, Roswell Rudd, Grachan Moncur III, Ray Anderson, Julian Priester, and George Lewis.

Kagel is a composer of experimental music and music-theater, conductor, and filmmaker who studied literature under Jorge Luis Borges; he was influenced by Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage, Erik Satie, and Harry Partch, he worked on early electronic music at the WDR Koln studios alongside Herbert Eimert, Robert Beyer, Gottfried Michel Koenig, Bruno Maderna, Konrad Boehmer, Herbert Brun, Karel Goeyvaerts, Bengt Hambraeus, Henri Pousseur, Anestis Logothetis, Gyorgi Ligeti, and Franco Evangelisti, and he lectured at the famous Darmstadt courses where he mingled with Luigi Nono, Earle Brown, Pierre Boulez, and Olivier Messiaen. • Globokar is a French-Yugoslavian avant garde trombonist, composer, and conductor who studied under Andre Hodeir, Rene Leibowitz, Luciano Berio, and Andre Lafosse, worked with Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Henri Pousseur, Mauricio Kagel, Toru Takemitsu, and Louis Andriessen, associated with Salvatore Sciarrino and Helmut Lachenmann, served as a department head at IRCAM, and formed the New Phonic Art improv group with Michel Portal, Carlos Roque Alsina, and Jean-Pierre Drouet. • Wolfgang Konig was a student of Globokar. • Lombardi studied with Bernd Alois Zimmermann.
