Recorded at the Warehouse, Memphis, Tennessee.
Always prone to rock music, the Meat Puppets came roaring out of the gate with 1994's TOO HIGH TO DIE, leaving the softer-edged, jazzy experimentalism of albums like UP ON THE SUN in the dust. The high-octane opener "Violet Eyes" peels off distorted riffs that would make Guns N' Roses proud. "We Don't Exist" has a crunchy, in-the-pocket punch that belies its quizzical existential message, and the band's first certified radio hit, "Backwater," lets a hard-rock boogie-rhythm carry the tune's sprightly melody.
None of this is to say that the Meat Puppets have traded in their brains for brawn here. Mixing styles and surprises is still the group's forte--there are jangly angles and remarkably surreal lyrics on "Never to be Found," country-fied folk on "Shine," and loping, mid-tempo meditations on "Why?" As always, the high caliber of musicianship impresses (the Puppets' brisk, fleet-fingered interludes can stand against any rock band of their generation), and the intriguing harmonies that characterize every song are both melancholic and oddly comforting. Like the Minutemen and Husker Du (two of the band's strongest contemporaries), the Meat Puppets rocked with intelligence and originality.

Industry Reviews
...[The Meat Puppets] take pleasure in chewing up pop formulas without burping cliches....deliver quirky fun on TOO HIGH, but they also wrap their superb chops around strong melodies and ingenious songwriting...
Musician (02/01/1994)

Performance: Trippy / Recording: Good - ...TOO HIGH TO DIE is one sprightly turn of the kaleidoscope after another, from the crystal dewdrop notes flung by Kirkwood's fleet fingered guitar on Never To Be Found, to a whimsical flight through the mental ionosphere entitled We Don't Exist...Ten years on the Meat Puppets are flying higher than ever....
Stereo Review (07/01/1994)

3 1/2 Stars - Good Plus - ...Some people still believe the old canard that alternative rockers are supposed to labor in obscurity. Meat Puppets prove that signing to a major label doesn't have to be a Faustian bargain....
