Greetings! Also this week, I am offering another mega-rare phonograph. This one features Adolfo Colombo, perhaps the most recorded Cuban artist during the first two decades of the twentieth century. This phonograph is arguably one of a kind.

Artist: COLOMBO AND VILLEGAS / COLOMBO AND PILAR GIMENEZ [ALSO KNOWN AS: JIMENEZ PILAR]

Titles: LA PASION DE UN BODEGUERO– (RUMBA); DEJAME ASI – (NO GENRE GIVEN).

Description:

This mega-rare recording features Adolfo Colombo (vocalist: tenor vocal) in two different duos, with orchestras. Side A (La Pasion de un Bodeguero) Colombo performs with Villegas (vocalist: baritone vocal), accompanied by the orchestra of Luis Casas. On the flip side, Colombo performs with Pilar Gimenez (soprano), accompanied by an unnamed orchestra. I have not been able to find any information about this mega-rare disc. Considering the performers and the record label, I would say that the tracks were likely recorded in the 1910s (1913?) and that this phonograph was probably released in the early 1920s.

Condition:

(VG+). This phonograph is in very good condition with mix of glossy surface, with only minimal traces of use and handling, and almost perfect labels (please examine pictures). Surface noise (static, hiss, clicks and pops/crackles) probably due to pressing deffects (micro particles, etc.). No skipped or repeat grooves. Plays loud and clear.

78s Grading:  I grade items visually, noting any defects such as scuffing and scratches, rim chips, or flakes, and hair or lam cracks.  In addition to the visual grading, I also offer a brief description of the overall sound quality as I hear it on my record player and sound equipment utilizing a 78 cartridge/stylus.  I do not use any state-of-the-art digital audio restoration software that removes hisses, clicks, pops, and crackles.  Those sounds are “natural” in many 78s as they were recorded (by acoustic or electric means) and pressed with technology developed in the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.

As many avid collectors know, many of these 78 rpm discs are extremely rare, hard to find, and in many cases may be unique examples.  Thus grading them with a letter or number is beside the point.  Recognizing that these recordings are exceptional, I was just lucky and happy to find a playable copy, no matter in what condition I found them, and I hope you will be too.
