With these 3 LPs from His Master’s Voice (ALP 1512 / 1531 / 1532, English EMI pressings, red/white semi-circle labels, mono – no stereo edition exist, laminated flipback jackets) one can collect complete Yehudi Menuhin’s second cycle of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin BWV 1001-1006, set down entirely at EMI Studio No. 3, Abbey Road, London.

Partita No. 1 in B minor BWV 1002 (rec. 5/6 & 9/10 March and 27 May 1957)

For some collectors, Menuhin’s first scaling of this Everest of the violin (made for La Voix de son Maître during the years 1933-1936) remains a benchmark for these works, but his later set represents a more concentrated affair, conceived from the outset as a complete cycle and executed with tremendous focus by Menuhin.  There can be little doubt that, playing and conducting Bach in the intervening two decades which separate these sets, was of enormous benefit to Menuhin, deepening his relationship to the music and its composer.  Recorded in the waning days of mono, it has never won the recognition it so richly deserves, and for this listener, it remains the finest integral cycle of the mono era, and one of Menuhin’s greatest achievements in the studio.

Incidentally, the striking cover photo shown on all three jackets was taken by Lotte Meitner-Graf, London. There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of each jacket, provided in English only, by Felix Aprahamian.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the 3 laminated flipback jackets is VERY GOOD throughout. . There is significant edgewear, particularly along the open edge, as well as creasing and discoloration. However, there are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and  attractive – overall, still a decent copy.

The condition of the 3 LPs is EXCELLENT throughout. Though surfaces are not silent, really these are fine copies and playback is quite fine. However, if you must have flawless or near-mint copies, these please do not buy this set – overall, these are excellent collector's copies.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
