Description
Mercury SR 90283, Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3, Byron Janis (pianist), Antal Dorati, London Symphony, RFR6A/RFR6A: This is NOT a reissue – it is the original 50+ year old, RFR pressing. It is praised as one of the very best of Mercury’s for both its sound and performance. At one point, it was #3 on HP's TAS Super Disk List, and HP was right (as he often was) - the sound is amazing with incredible hall ambiance, astounding imaging and very powerful low bass. It was in both the top 7 and the golden dozen on HP’ list, and is ranked #18 on Sid Marks’ final choices of the very best Mercury recordings. The sound is a perfect combination of piano and orchestra, and the performance is superb. This copy is practically perfect - it is hard to find anything wrong with it. The vinyl surfaces are clean, glossy and exceptionally quiet, except for a tiny bubble at the start of side 2 that sounds only very softly and very briefly. There are a couple of harmless paper scuffs that are barely visible and make no sound. Other than that, this copy is perfect, and the vinyl grades NM. The labels are perfectly clean with no wear, but one very faint spindle trail on each side. The jacket is clean, glossy and grades NM with no marks or seam splits, but very tiny corner scuffs (see photos). Jacket grading is NM, and the inner sleeve is also NM. Overall, this is beautiful copy of this amazing golden age recording that plays almost perfectly. Feel free to return for a full refund if not completely satisfied.
