Description
Michael Jackson – Thriller (1982) PROMO COPY
An especially collectible original-era U.S. copy of Michael Jackson's legendary Thriller, featuring an authentic CBS gold promotional stamp on the back of the gatefold jacket.
Issued on Epic Records in 1982, this copy has been identified through its deadwax as a Columbia Records Pitman pressing, with PAL 38112-2CF / PBL 38112-2BD matrices and stamped Customatrix marks on both sides.
Unlike an ordinary retail copy, the jacket was specifically designated by CBS “FOR PROMOTION ONLY – Ownership Reserved By CBS – Sale Is Unlawful,” making this a particularly interesting piece of Michael Jackson and Epic Records history.
The condition makes it even more appealing: the vinyl has been fully play-tested at VG+, the original gatefold remains a strong VG+, and the original illustrated lyric inner sleeve is an exceptionally well-preserved NM.

🟡 Collector Grade Assessment — Solid Collector Copy
🟡 Solid Collector Copy
A particularly strong collectible example of Thriller because of its:
- Authentic CBS gold-stamped promotional jacket
- Confirmed 1982 U.S. Columbia Pitman pressing
- PAL 38112-2CF / PBL 38112-2BD matrices
- Stamped Customatrix o marks on both sides
- VG+ play-tested vinyl
- VG+ original gatefold jacket
- NM original illustrated lyric inner sleeve
The promo designation and completeness elevate it well above an ordinary Thriller. It remains 🟡 rather than 🟢 because the vinyl and jacket are VG+, not NM, and this has the later Michael Jackson co-producer jacket rather than the scarcer first-state jacket.
