This fine LP from Philips (420 943-1, Dutch pressing, silver/red label, DDD stereo) features the 15-year-old Midori in a stunning performance of Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major Op. 6, recorded in the warm acoustics of Henry Wood Hall, London on 22, 23, and 26 May 1987 with conductor Leonard Slatkin and the London Symphony Orchestra on brilliant form.
Filling out the disc are their equally captivating renditions of Tchaikovsky's Sérénade mélancolique in B minor Op. 26 and Valse-scherzo in C Major Op. 34, made during these same sessions. Midori's Paganini can be spoken of in the same breath as those by Kogan, Rabin, and Perlman – really remarkable playing.
Wrote the eminent critic Ivan March in his August 1988 review for The Gramophone:
"A splendid new version of Paganini's Violin Concerto in D, the most famous, because of the enticing lyrical theme of the first movement. Midori, an astonishingly accomplished 13 year old, is fully equal to the work's formidable technical demands and one is never made to feel uncomfortable when she is dealing with the pyrotechnics of the upper tessitura. Slatkin's pacing of all three movements is admirably judged, and the soloist is able to relax in the finale while she produces her effortless bravura. The recording is realistically balanced, the soloist forward but not on top of the listener, with the orchestra making suitably exuberant sounds in the tuttis. What clinches the matter are the encores. Midori offers good performances of two Tchaikovsky morceaux de concert, producing some ravishingly melancholy timbre in the Serenade melancolique."
This album was produced by Mike Bremner and engineered by Hans Lauterslager and Erdo Groot. The memorable cover photo of Midori was taken by Christian Steiner. There are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Robin Golding, provided in German, English, French, and Italian.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is GOOD. There is a fair amount of edgewear, particularly at corners, as well as some creasing and discoloration (and an old price sticker) to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits and the album remain solid and presentable – not a collector's copy, but still a passable one.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
