"This is not the Christmas of the commercial community. Santa Claus, tinsel, trees, exchanged gifts, stockings, have no placed in this nativity landscape. Traditional Christmas behavior from total silence to shouting, eating, and dancing, from respectful praying to the shooting of muskets and declamatory speeches. This is not only the Christmas of December 25th, it is the festival of January 6, old Christmas, when the animals pray, when the firmament 'trembled with glee'. The panoramas contains not only the galaxies but Jesus as the kid next door. Mary and Joseph as the next door neighbours whose business is gossiped about. The morals and legend of Christmas were interwoven with everyday behaviour and belief and the manner of celebration depended upon the community, its organization and the origins of its members. Most of the songs are from rural or small-town usage. They come from a time when the evenings were long and dark, where households and settlements were isolated, where the length and content of a song could depend on how the participants felt at the time-in other words, where all those who took part in the festivities were producers as welll as consumers of the cultural commodity."
