Miles Davis, Changes.
(UK release of the USA Prestige LP 'Miles Davis and The Milt Jackson Quintet/Sextet'. Sleeve design is totally different to the USA release. This was an "all-star" session, which did not feature any of the members of Davis's working group of the time (Sonny Rollins, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones). Jackie McLean only plays on Minor March.)
1957 UK Esquire Records mono LP, 32-028. Earliest issue distinctive light mustard yellow labels with red/brown and black print, A/B matrix suffixes.
On the whole this over 50 year old LP is pretty well preserved. Close inspection of the centre spindle areas reveals a fair number of spider trace marks, although there is no whitening or wear. Vinyl surfaces still have an acceptably bright gloss. There are a few small and wispy hairline scuffs to the playing surfaces, but only around three of these are slightly more immediately visible, with one being a little longer in length. These are all surface scuffs, however. There are no deep embedded scratches or gouges. Generally appears a pretty carefully played LP. A few errant thumb/finger marks are visible here and there.
Playback is very clean. Sound is clear and bright, and not distorted. The LP is not groove damaged. There is no underlying background noise, and there are no loud ticks, continuous or otherwise. A little low level crackle at the run in to the A side, and the final track has a slight amount of crackle. Else LP plays cleanly with the odd very light instance of low level crackle never being prominent enough to disturb listening pleasure in the slightest. None of the aforementioned instances of light crackle seem to be attributable to marks on the vinyl surfaces, and I'm pretty sure there is plenty of room for improvement once excess finger etc. grease is removed. (I have made no attempt to clean the LP). Light crackle at the beginning of LPs is very often a case of handling residue in these areas. All in all, a clean playing LP, which provides a very pleasant listening experience thoughout.
Labels are without stickers, inscriptions etc.
Fuly laminated sleeve in overall very good condition. Still bright looking. Small scrape mark to front (just to left of Miles' forehead). Being against a black background, this could be 'touched up' fairly well. A touch of corner creasing around the LP outline, although no pronounced ringwear. Crease to top left corner slightly more marked. Some very light pinch marks here and there. Else pretty solid and clean with no heavy creasing, feathering or marks. No sticker damage and no pen marks. Rear backflaps intact. Seams are undamaged, and spine intact and solid. Just traces of wear to tips.
****Note that the laminate to sleeve front and rear is intact and without blemishes. I've just spotted that the photo of the rear of the sleeve shows a patch towards the bottom left hand corner which looks like a missing patch of laminate, as well as areas which resemble browning. Close inspection of this area reveals NO damage whatsoever. Patches of discolouration in the photo are merely reflections from the gloss surface.****
In summary a pretty nice copy of this fairly scarce LP (and session), and I would be pretty sure that this is more uncommon than the USA Prestige counterpart.
