Very first Terre Haute press 1D/1D side two error label
This is distinguished as the very earliest US mono pressing, as determined by the mis-ordered track listing on side two All Blues is listed as track 2. Why is this important/valuable/collectible? This was corrected within months of release- December of 1959 they say. Making this the verifiable earliest/freshest cut of this record form the master tapes. There is differentiated, audible detail and presence in the sonics.
Visually Graded: Solid VG. Lighter to average marks across both sides, some wear but not hammered. VPI Cleaned x2.
Jacket: Solid VG. Earliest design. Black cover has some whitening , ring wear and a horizontal scrape mark. Bottom seam has 3 inches closest to the opening partial split. Rear cover is quite clean white with some minor rub wear to the liner notes.
Play Grade: Surface noise lives separate from the music, tonality and presence is off the chart. Average VG overall, below are my play notes:
Side one
So What: Intro is solid VG, drums, bass and piano join go to strongest VG, full band tracks at Entry VG+ base with solid VG+ peaks for Coltrane’s solo, there is a spell of Strong VG in Cannonball’s solos, then back to entry VG+, bass tone is well rooted, fresh and outstanding here. Evan’s solo is Strongest VG/Entry VG+, finishing full band is solid VG
Freddie The Freeloader: Opens solid VG, quickly goes to Entry VG+, Peaks hangs out a lot in the Solid VG+ zone, with a strongest VG/Entry VG+ base, VG finish for close of the final theme
Blue in Green: Entry VG start, tics and sn for Bill Evan’s ballad. Peaks to solid VG. Finishes entry VG.
Side Two
All Blues: Entry VG- for first 20 seconds, first verse goes to solid VG, nice stretches with strongest VG peaks, solid VG base, sax tone is impeccable, finishes Entry VG- with a touch more surface noise
