Miles Davis All Stars

Walkin'-LP

Prestige LP 7076-mono

1958 33 1/3 RPM LP release by Miles Davis. Music is classic 'Hard Bop' with an all-star lineup, by the greatest one of the greatest innovators of that style. Most of the tracks were originally released on two different ten inch LP's a few years earlier. In 1957, this material was put on a full-length LP which very briefly had a New York address on the cover and label (the company relocated). This LP dates from around 1958 when the change was made to the 203 South Washington Ave., Bergenfield, NJ address on the label (the cover does not have the address on this copy). This copy, then, is an original Prestige second press LP on heavy vinyl with the following characteristics: "RVG" (Rudy Van Gelden" etched into vinyl, Deep Groove (deep groove running underneath the paper label), heavy vinyl (this copy weighs 181 grams).

The following is quoted from www.wikipedia.com:   "Walkin' (PRLP 7076) is a Miles Davis album released in 1957 by Prestige Records. The album compiles material previously released on two 10 inch LPs in 1954, along with one previously unreleased tune. Here credited to the "Miles Davis All-Stars", the songs were recorded on 3 April and 29 April 1954 by two slightly different groups led by Davis. Both sessions were recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's home studio.   The earlier session was a quintet with David Schildkraut on alto saxophone, and produced the three tracks on side two. Schildkraut is the only musician not credited on the cover, and is otherwise almost unknown. Two of these tracks were originally released on the 10" LP Miles Davis Quintet, Prestige PRLP 185. The earlier release also included "I'll Remember April", recorded at the same time, now found on the Prestige album Blue Haze (PRLP 7054).[2] Another tune from this session, "Love Me or Leave Me," was previously unreleased and substituted here for "I'll Remember April."   The second session, which makes up all of side one, was a sextet with J. J. Johnson on trombone and Lucky Thompson on tenor saxophone. The rhythm section was the same as the earlier session. These two tracks were originally issued on the 10"LP Miles Davis All-Star Sextet PRLP 182.[3] The album's title track, a staple of Davis's live set for many years, was key to the emerging hard bop approach developed in the mid-1950s, Davis providing it with an anthem. Written by Davis, the composition royalties for "Walkin'" were credited to his friend Richard Carpenter. The song was also covered by Bobby McFerrin on his 1987 album Spontaneous Inventions."   tracklist: 1.     "Walkin'" 13:26 2.     "Blue 'n' Boogie" 8:16 Side two    1.     "Solar" 4:44 2.     "You Don't Know What Love Is" 4:23 3.     "Love Me or Leave Me" 6:54

Now, as to the condition. We should make clear at the outset that this is a very well-played album, meaning that it has seen a lot of use and abuse. However, it's a pretty rare item and it's still quite useable.   Let's break the details down.

Front cover slick looks clean and glossy except for a water stain to the bottom right corner (this only shows up faintly in our scan-it is in fact a bit darker than this). 3" seam split at top right and 1/2 split/dogear at bottom right. Back cover has "Montgomery County Libaray" stamp in blue ink at top left corner. Back cover slick is quite clean except for the water stain to the bottom left corner. Overall grade is Very Good Plus.

A side of the disc (yellow and black label with black print-small sticker stain on the label) is the nicer of the 2 sides. Vinyl surface shows some dulling from play and has numerous light to moderate scuffs and scratches-nothing serious, however. B side shows more marks, some of them appearing heavier, with some especially heavy scuffs and spindle marks. Vinyl grade is Very Good. We have said earlier that this was a 'deep groove' LP. There are 2 meanings for that expression. One refers to a groove underneath the paper label-this just tells you that it's a very old LP and not a late period reissue. The other meaning of deep groove is that LP's of this era literally had deep grooves on the playing surface. This meant that a disc with light to moderate scratches on the top of the grooves would often play quite well because the sound was recorded at the bottom of the groove, below the scratches. A similarly marked up disc with 'shallow' grooves from the 1980's would probably be unlistenable. This brings us to the good news on this disc: it really does play surprisingly well. On the A side the music is loud and clear with only minor hiss & crackle. The B side with more marks has a slightly higher level of hiss and crackle, but it plays well also. LP has been double-cleaned on our VPI machine
