This beautiful and quite rare LP from Capitol (SP 8481, French Pathé-Marconi pressing, rainbow label/FDS logo at 9 o'clock, stereo, laminated flipback jacket) features Nathan Milstein's famous 'Four Italian Sonatas' album, one of the greatest of violin records, one which can be spoken of in the same breath as Rabin's 'Mosaics' LP (also for Capitol) and Oistrakh's 'Encores' LP for Columbia.

To hear these extraordinary in stereo, so well recorded with the outstanding Leon Pommers at the piano, is entracing, the microphones well capturing Milstein's silken and inimitable tone, the players set in a warm acoustics, and perfectly balanced to boot.

Recorded at Studio A, Capitol Studios, New York at 46th Street on 27-29 January 1959, Milstein's and program (with Pommers at the piano) is as follows:

Tartini: Sonata for Violin &  Continuo in G minor B.g5 "The Devil's Trill"

Corelli: Sonata for Violin & Continuo in D minor, 'La Follia', Op.5 No. 12

Geminiani: Sonata for Violin & Continuo in A Major Op.4 No. 12 (arr. Milstein)

Vivaldi: Sonata for Violin &  Continuo in A major Op. 2 No. 2 (RV.31)

There are excellent liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in French only.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is GOOD+. There is a small tear to the flipback portion of the jacket (upper-left corner), wear at the other corners, light creasing, a small bit of writing to the rear panel, and aging. However, there are no seamsplits, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, still a good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD+. There is light surface noise, more evident on Side 1 (Tartini/Vivaldi), but playback remains enjoyable. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is a very good collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
