Minor Victories is a band that could've only come out in 2016. Featuring Slowdive's Rachel Goswell, Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite, and Editors' James and Justin Lockey, songs would start off as a kernel of an idea from one musician, then be e-mailed around to everyone else who recorded parts until the songs become fully formed. In theory, it sounds like it would be a chaotic mess of styles, especially in the way it was recorded, but it is such a pleasant surprise to see it all come together so perfectly. And their respective styles are all there too: endless shoegaze drone, symphonic pop, wailing powerhouse guitars, and spirited vocals. "Scatted Ashes (Song for Richard)" feels like the best example of how these strange elements blend beautifully in cacophonous harmony to create an epic. "A Hundred Ropes" sounds like a long lost post-punk track with the fierce minimalism, mechanic drums, and a synth melody that is as hypnotic as it is catchy. "Folk Arp" shows Goswell's vocals at her best since Slowdive. In an ethereal track written by Braithwaite, it would miss the finesse and poetry of the song's atmospherics if it didn't have her howling whisper to guide it along. It's a sweepingly beautiful track that feels perfect in the middle of the album. The one distinctly different track is "For You Always," written and performed by Mark Kozelek, who completely takes the band on a strange, story-driven song that turns Minor Victories into Sun Kil Moon for a few minutes. It's too good of an album to jinx it by calling Minor Victories a "supergroup." The sloppy egos and half-baked ideas of similar groups don't exist here. Just harmonious bliss.
