redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome LP from Columbia Masterworks (ML 4739, US pressing, gray 6eye label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features conductor Dmitri Mitropoulos and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in a searing account of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor Op. 47, vividly recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York, on 1 December 1952.
Mitropoulos was a potent advocate of Shostakovich’s music, as is evidenced by his truly towering rendition of the composer’s Symphony No. 10 in E minor Op. 93 (Columbia ML 4959) and in his atmospheric accompaniment to David Oistrakh’s unsurpassed reading of The Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor Op. 99 (Columbia ML 5077), both also with the NYPO.
This Shostakovich Fifth is unflinching in its power and intensity and remains a landmark recording in the Shostakovich discography.

CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor corner wear and aging, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the jacket remains perfectly solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive in appearance – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
