ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful and rare LP from Columbia (33CX 1068, English pressing, blue/gold label – ED1, mono – no stereo edition exists, laminated flipback jacket) features Dimitri Mitropoulos' pioneering account of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 in D Major "Titan", recorded with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in the spacious acoustics of Northrup Auditorium, Minneapolis on 4 November 1940. Not only is this an historically important recording, it is also a richly musical one, with Mitropoulos drawing a brilliant performance from the MSO.

 

Of Sony's CD re-issue of this recording, the superb critic David Nice wrote for BBC Music Magazine:

 

"Latest to join the nostalgic-presentation bandwagon, Sony has chosen a worthy occasion in recording history to showcase in style. Mitropoulos's pioneering 1940 Mahler One begins unpromisingly with screechy violin harmonics and monster winds, but settles to an acceptable-sounding presentation of a live-wire event (no repeats, but who's complaining?). Each movement encompasses so many clear-etched moods and tempi that the final impression of dramatic unity can only amaze."

 

Incidentally, there are superlative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Norman Demuth, printed in English only. The cover photo of Mitropoulos is uncredited.

 

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

 

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is wear at corners and a 2" seamsplit to the spine, as well as along the open edge, where there is also some fraying to the laminate. However, there are no seampslits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the jacket remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

 

The condition of the LP itself is GOOD+. There is surface noise, some patches of needle-like sounds, particularly in Mvts I & IV. Nonetheless, the recording has great clarity and the sound is quite magical. There are no needle jumps, but – as mentioned – a few areas of high surface noise. Thus, those wanting flawless, near-mint surfaces, or even excellent surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is a very good collector's copy.
