JOE HILL LOUIS on Modern 828 ?in E- condition..EYESIGHT TO THE BLIND/GOING DOWN SLOW.....Joe Hill Louis was a blues singer, guitarist, drummer, and harmonica player, all at the same time.  He is one of only a small number of one-man blues bands to have recorded commercially in the 1950s, and also recorded under the names Chicago Sunny Boy, Leslie Louis, and Little Joe.

 

Early Life

Born either Leslie or Lester Hill in Raines, Tennessee on September 23, 1921, his nickname “Joe Louis” arose as a result of his childhood fights with another youths.  He left home at the age of 14 to work as a servant for a wealthy Memphis family, and also worked at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee in the late 1930s.

In the 1940s he developed his one-man-band act after settling down in Memphis, and billed himself as "Joe Hill Louis 'The Be-Bop Boy' And His One Man Band."  He became popular playing in and around Handy Park, ultimately landing a 15 minute show on WDIA, taking over the “Pepticon Boy” radio program from B.B. King.

Recording Career

Louis' recording debut was for Columbia Records in 1949, followed by releases on Phillips (Sam Phillips first label) in 1950, Modern in 1951, Checker in 1952, Sun in 1953, Meteor (under the name Chicago Sunny Boy) in 1953, Rockin' (as Leslie Louis) in 1953, Big Town in 1954, Vendor 100 in 1955, and House of Sound (as Little Joe) in 1957.

Louis' most notable recording was probably as guitarist on Rufus Thomas’s “Bear Cat,” recorded as an answer record to Big Mama Thornton’s “Hound Dog,” which reached #3 on the R&B chart and resulted in legal action for copyright infringement.  He also shared writing credit for the song “Tiger Man,” which was recorded by Elvis Presley, among others.

Louis cut an amazing version of "Hydramatic Woman" in 1953 for Sun Records, with Big Walter Horton on harmonica, but Sam Phillips never released it.  The song was recorded again for Big Town Records and released in 1954.

Death

Joe Hill Louis died on August 5, 1957 in John Gaston Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, from tetanus contracted as a result of a deep cut to his thumb, sustained while working as an odd job man.  He was 35 years old.

N- = like new (a 9 1/2 to 10 out of 10!), E+ = a virtually perfect copy with only minor signs of having been played ( a 9 out of 10), E = very slight signs of wear, maybe some minor scuffing and/or light scratches but a very clean copy with little groove wear ( 8 out of 10),E- = slightly above average copy, some groove wear and minor blemishes but a very decent copy ( a 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 out of 10), VG+ = an average copy, signs of use, some groove wear but still a decent copy ( 5-6 out of 10), VG = wear, scuffing, light scratches but a very playable copy ( 4 out of 10), VG- getting scary!...will play but is quite worn ( 3 out of 10), G+ = a playable copy but very very worn ( 2 out of 10), G through G- = in the words of my pal RUSS SHOR " a wall hanger!" P = a hunk of shellac which once might have been a phonograph record!
