Description
Extremely rare SMC Pro-Arte record, a legendary NYC label owned by Gabriel Oller of the Spanish Music Center. These are Mongo's first USA recordings made shortly after he arrived. It is hard-core, 100% authentic Cuban rumba rhythms played by Mighty Mongo. Chango is a santo rhythm of the rumba family and side B is Conga Callejera, a comparsa/carnival rhythm These are strictly percussion recordings., what is called fundamento in Cuba.
In 1985 I went to the lobby of the Belmont Hotel where the then elderly Gabriel Oller had a record shop selling the remainder of his inventory and I bought dozens of LPs, 10", and 78s that I found rummaging through his stock. Because I bought the 12" 33/1/3 LP of these 78s, I never played the 78s and they have been carefully stored away and protected since I purchased them. Playing 78s on a good 78rpm turntable with a good stylus produces very good sound!
If you know about 78s I highly recommend that you play them with a hollow point stylus as a diamond needle will ruin the sound after 1 play. This is the "unbreakable" last run of 78s and not the brittle previous versions. I will take great care to ship this, I will use thin bubble wrap over the record in its original sleeve, then protect it with cardboard on both sides and then bubble wrap again placing in a carboard mailer. I will insure the shipment in case of a freak accident along the way causing damage.
