This magnificent LP from RCA Victor (LSC-2342, US pressing, shaded dog label – ED1, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features conductor Pierre Monteux and the London Symphony Orchestra’s resplendent account of Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major Op. 43, recorded by Decca (producer: John Culshaw / engineer: Kenneth Wilkinson) in the fabled acoustics of London’s Kingsway Hall, on 18 June 1958.
Wrote the outstanding critic Richard Kaplan for Fanfare:
“Pierre Monteux’s 1958 recording of Sibelius’s Second is his only studio recording of that composer’s work, but it is a thoroughly idiomatic, satisfying account. It was last issued in 2006 in a Decca “Original Masters” set devoted to the conductor, but I see that, appallingly, that set is now out of print, so it’s good to have it back on this Eloquence reissue. Unfairly typecast as a conductor of French and Russian music, Monteux brings the same qualities to Sibelius’s Symphony as he does to Beethoven and Brahms in recordings of the same period: a dynamism that belies his age; an attention to detail; and a judicious choice of tempos. His first movement is large-scaled and broad, but always maintains a sense of motion. The second movement is flexible, with powerful climaxes, but never bogs down. There is no wallowing in the finale; the climactic ending seems to come as a natural consequence of the preceding music. The sound of this recording is clear and full, although the violins have a touch of glare that I don’t remember from the original RCA Victor LP.”
There are excellent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by former RCA producer Charles O’Connell. The striking cover portrait of Sibelius is uncredited.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is slight wear and discoloration along the edges, as well as to the rear panel, where there are also two former price stickers. However, there are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a fine collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT+. Though surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring CD silent surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
