Description

Exit Smiling is a 1979 booklet by a young Steven Morrissey detailing the lives of his favorite movie stars and their treatment on film.  It features future Smiths cover stars and lyrical inspirations, such as Richard Davalos, Shelagh Delaney, Terence Stamp, and Diana Dors.  Morrissey submitted it to Manchester-based Babylon Books after they published and distributed his first two booklets, The New York Dolls and James Dean is Not Dead, but they declined Exit Smiling despite paying Morrissey in advance of 50 pounds.  Unfortunately, that 50 pound advance ended up biting him in the ass come 1998 when Babylon Books decided to print a special limited thousand copy run of Exit Smiling.  This Upset Morrissey greatly because he was basically powerless to stop its release, plus it looked like crap.  Babylon Books used a faxed copy with corrections and notes because that was all they had.  Clearly a grab to profit from Morrisey's fame, Exit Smiling would have been a great little read that showed insight into Morrissey's film influences if it were not for the bad blood surrounding it publication.
