Scarce lp with exquisite abstract experimental works. Rothko Chapel was composed as a tribute to the painter, commissioned for performance at his eponymous Texas "spiritual environment" pictured on the cover; "Rothko's imagery goes right to the edge of his canvas, and I wanted the same effect with the music -- that it should permeate the whole octagonal-shaped room and not be heard from a certain distance." The performers include Karen Phillips, viola, Eberhard Blum, flute, Donald Knaack, percussion, David Gibson, cello, conductor Jan Williams, and the Gregg Smith Singers.

artist info from album notes etc.:
Morton Feldman studied under Wallingford Riegger and Stefan Wolpe and was influenced by Scriabin, Ligeti, Cornelius Cardew, and Mauricio Kagel; he became a key member of the New York School of experimental American composers (John Cage, Earle Brown, David Tudor, Christian Wolff), was one of the first composers to use graphic notation (a technique influenced by his many close friends in the visual arts such as Mark Rothko, Philip Guston, Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock, and Robert Rauschenberg), and he also pioneered the use of indeterminacy.
