You are viewing a pristine copy of Mosaic Records: The Complete Roulette Studio Recordings of Count Basie and His Orchestra on 15 LPs. This represents what was originally on 23 albums, spanning the Roulette recording years 1956-1962 .
I am the original owner of this set numbered 3023 of edition limited to 3500 albums (copyright 1993) which has been long unavailable. I will attest that none of the LPs from this set have been played in all the years that it sat in my collection! Each is a “Q-LP,” which is Mosaics designation for best Quality LP with weight 180 grams. With the entire LP set weighing in at over seven pounds, this is indeed the monster set of the Basie “Atomic” era.
From the introductory page of the booklet:
“1957 was a pivotal year for the Count Basie Orchestra. Five years earlier, the Count had said hello to the New Testament, embracing [new] arrangements…..in July, 1957, he finally said goodbye to the Old Testament when, at the Newport Jazz Festival, Lester Young sat in with the Basie Band for the last time.”
“In the transitional period between these dates, the new band had developed, using chats predominantly by its own members, notably Ernie Wilkins and Frank Foster. As the “Dance Sessions” band succeeded and grew in strength, so its grip on the past eased and most of the older repertoire was phased out, war horses like ‘One O’clock Jump’ and ‘Jumpin’ at the Woodside’ being notable exceptions.”

The only defect, and it is nominal, is a small area on the bottom edge of the library case that was incurred tonight, as I removed the set to do this listing! The outer paper covering for the library box adhered to the bookshelf, pulling off a small superficial chevron-shaped area measuring 1/4” by ¾” (this is on the bottom edge of the black outer paper cover of the box; see photo of bottom of box, it is smack in the center of that bottom edge).
I have taken photos of the discography as was arranged on these 15 LPs, and also a photo of the listing of the original 24 LPs that were reconstituted into this 15 LP set. Hopefully, the text is legible on the enlargements. If any potential buyer(s) are unable to read the text to your satisfaction, please contact me.
