The Mothers of Invention do “doo-wop.” First time round listening to this you would never suspect this being a MOI record, which was part of the idea according to Zappa, along with the idea to make it related to “Uncle Meat”, with the concept of an old man transforming a band into anthropomorphic animals, as seen on the cover of “…Ruben & The Jets.”
The lyrics were written as an intentional satire of love songs, while re-living their nostalgic teenage days, which consisted of doo-wop bands and many other kinds of past novelties of the 1950s. Listed on the cover was the quote: “Is this The Mothers of Invention under a different name in a last ditch attempt to get their cruddy music on the radio" Some could say that was a reason for the creation of “…Ruben & The Jets”, but that was not the reason. Despite the obvious hint that this was a Mothers album with the quote on the cover, “Ruben” turned out to be a hit with radio disc jockeys who believed that Verve unearthed an obscure doo-wop record. One of there best.
Sleeve: Glossy thick gatefold sleeve. Fully readable and proud spine, all edges true and square - light scuffing corners and top edge from shelf use.
No splits, tears or writing. In the past the inside edges became stuck, so there are some light internal surface tears (see photos).
So external cover (front/back) graded EX and internal VG/VG+ - hence VG+/EX- given the outside remains in decent condition, although appreciate this is subjective.

Vinyl: Visually the vinyl retains its original lovely sheen, nice bright and clean, couple of light wispy hairlines from sleeve removal, feint needle lines only visible under bright light- graded EX/EX-

Audio: Lovely clear audio, no hisses, hops, skips, sticks, pips or pops. Plays through clean, nothing that interferes with listening in any way (played on Pro-Ject carbon - blue Ortofon) overall audio graded EX+
I have tried to be honest and transparent in my description - the photographs form part of the description. Questions are welcome, don't hesitate to ask. I strictly adhere to the Record Collector Magazine's Grading Guide using one + or - for addition guidance:
MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
