Too Fast for Love is the debut album from American heavy metal band Mötley Crüe, initially released on November 10, 1981 on the small independent Leathür Records label. Major label Elektra Records signed the band the following year, at which point the album was remixed and partially re-recorded. This re-release, with a different track listing and slightly different artwork (e.g., red lettering on the cover and a different interior photograph of the band), has become the standard version. The original mix of the album remained unreleased on CD until 2003, when it was included in the Music to Crash Your Car to: Vol. 1 box set compilation.

While the album only reached number 77 on the Billboard 200 album chart upon its 1982 national release in the US, it would in the ensuing years reach platinum status. The song "Live Wire" was released as the band's first ever single, with an accompanying music video.

The album cover art was inspired by The Rolling Stones' album Sticky Fingers, which features very similar artwork.

Release history

There are three known vinyl pressings of the original Leathür Records version, along with one known cassette release and a silkscreen red picture disc promotional CD. The first vinyl pressing had white lettering on the cover and the record label was white with black lettering. The back cover photo of Vince Neil shows him with a massive hairdo which was airbrushed in as his hair color did not show well on the white album sleeve. The second pressing has red lettering on the cover and the record label is again white with black lettering. Neil's hair has also been fixed on the back cover photo. The second pressing also has a slightly different photo insert of the band. The third pressing has red lettering on the cover and the record label is black with white lettering. The first pressing seems to be the rarest, with only 900 copies pressed. The second pressing seems to be the most common one available on the secondary market. Although some sources indicate that the Leathür version also contained the song "Toast of The Town", this is correct. This song was also the B-side to a 7-inch vinyl single of "Stick to Your Guns" which was self-released by the band on the Leathür Records label prior to the recording of the Too Fast for Love album.

It was remixed and re-released on August 20, 1982, by Elektra Records, with which the band had recently signed its first recording contract. The Elektra version contained a different track order and omitted the song "Stick to Your Guns" as well as the first verse from the title track. However, the initial release of the album on Elektra in Canada (on both vinyl and cassette) was not the remixed version, but instead was the original Leathür Records version with the Elektra label on it, and included the song "Stick to Your Guns". This was released two months before the re-mixed version was released by Elektra worldwide. The reason for this was that Mötley Crüe was about to embark on a Canadian tour and Elektra wanted to ensure that a product was available while the band was touring the country. Once the remixed version was completed, later Canadian pressings were the same as the Elektra version everywhere else.

In 1997, Mötley Crüe and Elektra split. Mötley Crüe formed their own record label called "Mötley Records", and re-released all of the band's albums prior to 2000's New Tattoo. The 2003 re-release included the Elektra tracks, the Leathür version of the song "Too Fast for Love", "Stick to Your Guns", "Toast of the Town", a live version of "Merry-Go-Round", and another song entitled "Tonight".
