Description
This is the 12" set of Moussorgsky's "Pictures At An Exhibition" 78 RPM 4-disk set Victor (AM-442). Recorded the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy in 1937. It was released in 1938.
Pictures at an Exhibition is a suite of ten pieces (plus a recurring, varied Promenade) composed for the piano by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky in 1874. The suite is Mussorgsky's most famous piano composition and has become a showpiece for virtuoso pianists. It has become further known through various orchestrations and arrangements produced by other musicians and composers, with Maurice Ravel's arrangement being the most recorded and performed.
When Eugene Ormandy took over the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1936 following Leopold Stokowski's decision to resign the conductorship. Ormandy wanted a version of Pictures of his own and commissioned Lucien Cailliet, the Philadelphia Orchestra's 'house arranger' and player in the woodwind section, to produce one. This version was premiered and recorded by Ormandy in 1937.Recorded on October 17, 1937, at the Academy of Music, Philadelphia, on Victor 78-rpm matrices CS-013057 through CS-013064. First issued in 1938 as Victor Musical Masterpiece set M-442 (records 14851 through 14854), and, in slide automatic sequence as AM-442 (records 14855 through 14858).Some minor scuffing and surface scratches. The album has a tear on the binding (see photo). There is a small tear at the bottom on the first sleeve.
