Moving Pictures by Rush.
Recorded at Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec, during October and November of 1980, this record captured Rush at the exact moment the Canadian trio balanced progressive ambition with tighter, radio-ready songwriting. Produced by the band alongside longtime collaborator Terry Brown, it distills years of arena-rock craft into a leaner, more focused statement, wrapped in Hugh Syme's striking cover concept and design with photography by Deborah Samuel.
The playing is remarkable for a three-piece. Geddy Lee anchors everything with his bass while layering in Oberheim, Minimoog and Taurus pedal synthesizers, all beneath his instantly recognizable vocals. Alex Lifeson moves fluidly between six- and twelve-string electric and acoustic guitars, adding his own Taurus pedal textures. Neil Peart, contributing the bulk of the lyrics, plays a percussion arsenal that reaches well past a standard kit — timbales, glockenspiel, orchestra bells, crotales, wind chimes and cowbell among them. Together they create music that is intricate yet driving, cerebral yet immediate.
This particular pressing is a genuine audiophile object: 180g vinyl cut using Direct Metal Mastering, remastered by Sean Magee at Abbey Road Mastering Studios in December 2014, and complete with its hype sticker and one-page insert bearing lyrics on one side and credits and images on the other. For collectors, it pairs a landmark album with reference-grade presentation.
