Le Nozze di Figaro is a 169-minute studio album of Mozart’s opera, performed by Christiane Barbaux, Jules Bastin, Jane Berbie, Ileana Cotrubas, Jose van Dam, Zoltan Kélémén, Tom Krause, Marjon Lambriks, Frederica von Stade, Anna Tomowa-Sintow and Heinz Zesnick with the Chorus of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. It was recorded in April 1978 and released in 1979. This famous performance is in stereo in a beautifully re-mastered recording from the original ORF master tapes. Some say this is the greatest performance of this work on recorded sound. The cast is of a quality that is unsurpassable-indeed, it could not be equalled especially today. You may well have other favorites for individual roles, but no ensemble comes close to the sheer vocal brilliance of this cast.
The Marriage of Figaro (Italian: Le Nozze di Figaro), is an opera buffa (comic opera) in four acts composed in 1786 by Mozart, with an Italian libretto written by Lorenzo da Ponte. It premiered in Vienna on 1 May 1786. The opera's libretto is based on the 1784 stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais,La Folle Journee ou le mariage de figiro ("The Mad Day, or The Marriage of Figaro"). It tells how the servants Figaro and Susanna succeed in getting married, foiling the efforts of their philandering employer Count Almaviva to seduce Susanna and teaching him a lesson in fidelity.
Recorded at the Sofiensaal, Vienna, Austria in April and May 1978, released 1979.
