A Critics View

The Stereo Record Guide Volume II (1960) said ……….”The Overture and Interludes are worth having for curiosity value, but the real attractions are the Notturno for Four Orchestras and the Serenata Notturno for Strings and Timpani. The prospect of pushing four bodies of sound through only two speakers might have deterred all but the most determined of engineers but Decca’s have certainly risen to the occasion. What they have done is to combine, most effectively and artistically true stereo and echo effects, so that the left-right alternation is helped out by a forward backward sound that really suggests Mozart’s four groups. The orchestra is in excellent form and it’s soloists too are outstanding. Both Maag and Decca are to be congratulated on this release. ”

Robert Moon and Michael Gray in their book “Full Frequency Stereophonic Sound” place this record in the Top Rank of Decca recordings, giving 9/10 for the recording and 10/10 for the performance.

Record Condition (Play graded throughout)

Prior to playing, the record was cleaned on my Moth Record Cleaning Machine. Playback equipment comprised a Thorens TD160, Linn Basik LVX Arm with Audio Technica AT-95E Cartridge.

The record was examined in bright sunlight. There are a number of  light marks on both sides plus a rectangular mark on side 1 that is clearly visible in the photograph.(top of the record) The sleeve is exceptionally clean but with a water stain on the rear bottom left corner, again this is clearly visible in the photograph. The spine is undamaged and there are one or two minor creases. The original Decca inner sleeve is also clean and unmarked.

Side 1

Side 1 plays virtually without fault. There are just three faint repetitive ticks, no signs of wear or deterioration in sound quality.

Side 2

Side 2 plays virtually without fault. There are a few very faint ticks in the Andante of K.345 otherwise no signs of wear or deterioration in sound quality.

The record will be supplied with a new Anti-Static (Nagaoka style) inner sleeve plus the original Decca inner sleeve, and a new PVC protective outer sleeve
