Wrote the outstanding critic James Reel for Fanfare:

“Because of necessarily selective reissue programs, we tend to remember Charles Munch as a specialist in French music. His tastes ranged more widely than that, though, and a bit of his non-Gallic repertoire does dribble back onto the market from time to time. Munch’s way with Beethoven was especially enjoyable; French air-checks from the 1960s reveal it to be consistently lean and fleet in what I suppose is a French manner, but it’s by no means lightweight. The same could be said of these 1957 (“Reformation”) and 1958 (“Italian”) Boston Symphony Mendelssohn recordings. The “Italian” Symphony, in particular, abounds with joie de vivre , and the more serious “Reformation” Symphony maintains gravity without excessive heaviness.”

This remarkable album was produced by Richard Mohr and engineered by Lewis Layton. There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by John N. Burk, printed in English only. The striking cover photo was taken by Duncan Edwards.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT There is minuscule wear at corners, , but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very fine collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
