This gorgeous deluxe LP – in a 1S/1S pressing – one of the great releases from the 'Golden Age of Stereo' – from RCA (LDS-2625, US pressing, Shaded Dog label – 1S/2S, stereo, full-size 12-page booklet and original inner sleeve included) features the first and most lavish issue of Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony Orchestra's glorious Milhaud album, pairing landmark performances of La Création du Monde and the Suite Provençale – taped in rich, atmospheric sound by RCA (producer: Max Wilcos / engineer: Lewis Layton) in the fabled acoustics of Symphony Hall.
The exact discographic details are as follows:
Milhaud: La Creation du Monde Op. 81 – rec. 13 March 1961.
Milhaud: Suite Provencale Op. 152b – rec. 21 November 1960.
These Soria issues were truly remarkable, designed by Albert Skira, the book printed in Switzerland by SKIRA. Indeed, this full-size 12-page booklet, on heavy textured paper, includes notes on the music by Edward Lockspeiser, an essay by Milhaud himself ("Harlem in the Twenties: An Excursion into Jazz"), striking photos of the composer (including one with the artist Fernand Léger), conductor Charles Munch, and reproductions of works by Léger and Paul Cézanne's Le Cabanon de Jourdan (1906), the latter in full color.
The Creation du Monde has never been surpassed on disc, and indeed, the same could be said for the Suite Provencale, with incredibly stylish playing throughout. It simply doesn't get better than this, whether in terms of performance, recording, or production.
