Around 1936-37, noted American conductor and arranger Lucian Cailliet (1897-1985) was commissioned by Ormandy (new appointed to the Philadelphia Orch.) to make an orchestral arrangement of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures” score, meant to rival Stokowski’s and Ravel’s arrangements, at a time when the Ravel version was not yet universally considered THE version. The Mussorgsky-Cailliet version was immediately recorded in October of 1937 by Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orch.--and then consigned to history, never to be recorded (nor played?) again. Here is that super-rare 78 set from 1937, 4 discs in NM- condition. (I didn’t realize that 78s could be shiny!)
