ID no. 9007655 Title: Mussorgsky, Pictures at an Exhibition Test Pressing Artist: Sargent/ LSO Product Condition: SS Cover Condition: M- Description: This auction is for a STILL SEALED single LP Test Pressing marked (A/B) of the Classic Records 200gram reissue of Moussorgsky's "Picures at an Exhibition" with jacket. These highly collectible test pressings are from the first stamper and less than 20 exist. Test pressings reflect the closest you can get to the lacquers and hence have a special collectible value and store of value. Another of the series of EVEREST recordings done in London with Sir Malcolm Sargent conducting the London Symphony in this event performing a couple of old war horses in Pictures and Night on Bald Mountain. To say these are definitive performances would be overstating the case, however, they are perfectly executed if at a bit slower pace than others - notably the Reiner / CSO on RCA. Rene Leibowitz's performances on Power of the Orchestra (RCA VCS 2659) have been the sonic standards for many years but the Everest takes the sonics that make these pieces sing to a new level of reality - you can for a moment actually believe you are in the Hall. It takes a certain majesty to pull off full orchestra reality in the home environment and this recording comes as close as possible to fully achieving that effortless sense of size necessary to do so. Bert Whyte is again at the controls for another outstanding EVEREST 35 mm recording at London's famed Walthamstow Assembly Hall - the same hall used extensively by the Decca and Kenneth Wilkinson. The LP was cut DIRECTLY FROM THE 35mm MAGNETIC FILM using a vintage Westrex 1551 tape machine, with specially built playback electronics that are vastly superior to any others used on these machines to playback the original 35mm tapes. The Len Horowitz / History of Recorded Sound specially modified 1551, fitted with brand new playback heads matched to the revolutionary playback electronics was stationed at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. With Len Horowitz running the playback machine and Bernie Grundman mastering from the three track 35mm tapes, Classic Records has been able to cut the legendary sound and performances DIRECTLY FROM THE 35mm MAGNETIC FILM through Classic's "ALL TUBE" tape playback system and cutting system at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. Jacket in mint condition. Tiny dent on bottom left hand corner.
