Description
Myrth was a jazz-rock sextet from Phoenix in the Blood Sweat & Tears and early Chicago mold. They recorded one album for RCA in 1969 and then disappeared from sight. The LP kicks off with the easy swinging “Gotta Find a Way,” which features tight horn arrangements and vocal harmonies, reminiscent of Chicago’s first album. A soulful organ adds some extra texture to the upbeat “He Don’t Know” with a jazzy interlude that carries an energetic sax solo. Female backing vocals give the slinky “Set It Straight” a dose of R&B and fuzzy guitar bends provide an unexpected psychedelic touch. An affecting lead vocal highlights “Fading Image,” a touching jazz ballad that effectively shifts into 3/4 time midway through. Discordant plucked strings and backwards cymbal effects wend their way through the stark, moody introduction to “Shed My Skin.” Its growling vocals and experimental tone almost presage latter-era Tom Waits. The song then morphs into Sly and the Family Stone funk, capped off by a percussion-filled ending.
Good example of a band with horn section from late 60's, like Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears.
This album unusually also has a live bird tweeting between most tracks. A bird which was outside the recording studio at the time.
