ONLY ETERNITY will reveal the great good for God and country that has been ac- complished by the Baptist Power Conference in Myrtle, Mississippi. This annual week-long meeting is the fulfillment of a vision that the Lord gave to Dr. Percy Ray and to the Spirit-filled members of the Myrtle Baptist Church. While he was praying in a farmhouse near Hornsby, Tennessee, Percy Ray was made to realize that the Lord was calling him to a world-wide ministry. Although he did not understand all that was involved at the time, the Lord began to show him definitely in a hotel room in Anderson, South Carolina, that a place would be established where both preachers and laymen could learn more about the Word of God and learn how to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Lord moved upon the heart of Dr. Percy Ray to fast for 20 days as he labored in prayer about the beginnings of Camp Zion. He spent the first week of the fast at Inman, South Caro- lina, in the home of J. Edward Lehman, the second week of the fast in the home of J. Doyle Turner in Bruce, Mississippi, and the remainder of the time in the pastorium at Myrtle. Members of the church at Myrtle could tell from his preaching that the pastor was being used of God for the undertaking of a great ministry! He preached sermons until the congregation of the Myrtle Baptist Church saw the picture of churches—empty, wilted, dry, and failing because they were not filled with the Holy Spirit. As could be expected, there was opposition from the very beginning. Many misunderstood and became bitter, re- bellious, and even ugly in their attitude toward the pastor and those in the church who were loyal to his leadership. The Lord required a great testing of both pastor and people before Camp Zion became a reality. At the close of the fast, the first Baptist Power Conference took place in Myrtle Baptist Church in January of 1949. A number of in- terested friends and preachers were invited and attended this first meeting. The Lord put His approval upon this meeting by filling al- most everyone present with His Holy Spirit! All of the people in the church house were so overjoyed by this unusual visitation from Heaven that everyone in the building was shouting at one time! Many decisions for consecration, dedication, and separation from worldliness were made as the altar was filled again and again. People were so caught up in the Spirit that no one present for the meeting even realized that an eight-inch snowfall had covered the ground outside. The manifold blessings of God have been very evident upon the ministry of Camp Zion ever since its founding. Thousands of people have been saved in the services; and on the grounds, hundreds of young men have been called into the ministry, and literally thou- sands of Christians have had their lives changed by the transforming ministry of this unusual place. Present facilities include dor- mitories for both men and women, a dining hall seating over 2,000, a Christian Bookstore, a counseling center called “Bethany,” both the old and new church auditoriums of the Myrtle Baptist Church, the church pastorium, and a huge tabernacle seating over 2,500! The crowds have increased every year since the Conference was first begun. The wisdom of God in using the foolish things of this world to confound the mighty is seen in the location of the camp. Myrtle, Mississippi, is a small rural community of 375 people located seventy-six miles southeast of Memphis, Ten- nessee, on highway 78. Nothing less than the Lord can account for the thousands of people who come to this out-of-the-way place for spiritual rejuvenation every year! On May 21, 1910, Dr. Percy Ray was born in Chalybeate, (Tippah County) Mississippi. He has been the Pastor of the Myrtle Baptist Church since the third Sunday in December of 1935. His revival and Bible Conference min- istry has kept him on the road for many years and has taken him into most of the continental United States to preach. Each year Dr. Ray reminds those attending the Baptist Power Conference of its three-fold purpose: (1) To deepen the spiritual life of those who attend, (2)To gain a better knowledge of the Word of God and the work of the Holy Spirit, and (3)To pray for revival in our Baptist churches. The opening date for this conference is al- ways Monday after the fourth Sunday in Janu- ary. In September of 1955, Dr. Ray met Bob Gray at a Bible Conference in Garland, Texas, and invited him to speak in the January, 1956, Conference. “Boxes, Bottles, and Books at the Judgment Seat of Christ” was the final message that Dr. Gray preached on that par- ticular program. He has been invited back to preach every year since that time. More re- quests have been made for copies of this sermon than any other message that Dr. Gray has ever preached at the Camp! He did not know until after the service was over that it had been recorded by a Christian layman from Inverness, Mississippi, Mr. Sam Reed. The copy of the tape that was used for the pro- duction of this album was furnished by Mr. Loren (Cody) Dawson, Tape Ministry Supply, Jacksonville, Illinois. All photographs were taken by Mr. Ron Ormond of Nashville, Ten- nessee. Dr. Bob Gray is the Pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida. His church has the largest Sunday school and member- ship in the State of Florida. His church just recently moved into a new 41/2-million-dollar complex located on a 148 acre tract adjacent to Interstate 10. Over 2,000 students are en- rolled in the Trinity Christian Academy, a Christian day-school ministry of the church that shares joint facilities with the Sunday school. Other related ministries of the church are: the publication of a monthly paper, The Baptist Beacon, a downtown Rescue Mission, a rehabilitation farm for alcoholics and dope addicts, the Trinity Youth Camp, the Trinity Book Store, and 55 Sunday school buses that operate throughout the greater Jacksonville area. Both the introduction and the closing com- mentary for this message was made by Dr. Percy Ray and is included on the records.
