Although he is primarily remembered for his scores for Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles' film Citizen Kane, and The Day the Earth Stood Still, Bernard Herrmann was also extremely effective writing for films in the fantasy-adventure genre. The most satisfying of these are the quartet of pictures Herrmann scored for the team of producer Charles H. Schneer and stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen. Although it isn't the best known of the four, Mysterious Island (1961) remains one of the freshest entries of the series; although it does not have the familiarity of The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958), it is a little known gem that proves captivating upon discovery. One reason for Mysterious Island's high level of artistic success is the wallop of a score that Bernard Herrmann wrote for it. Composed in close proximity to Psycho (1960), Mysterious Island features Herrmann firing on all cylinders, in cues ranging from pounding intensity to soaring lyrical themes, all retaining the strong air of mystery and impending doom indicated by the title; it is one of Herrmann's best PaymentPaypal Accepted
