Artist Overview: Nailbomb Nailbomb was a short-lived but highly influential industrial thrash metal project formed in 1993 by two key figures in extreme metal: Max Cavalera of Sepultura and Alex Newport of Fudge Tunnel. The duo's collaboration combined Cavalera's aggressive thrash metal sensibilities with Newport's background in sludge and industrial music.
Nailbomb existed primarily as a studio project, releasing only one studio album, Point Blank, in 1994. The band's lineup for the album included Cavalera and Newport handling vocals, guitar, and bass, with guest appearances from Max's brother Igor Cavalera (Sepultura) on drums, and Andreas Kisser (Sepultura) and Dino Cazares (Fear Factory) on guitar.
The band's only official live performance for nearly three decades was at the 1995 Dynamo Open Air Festival in the Netherlands, which was later released as the live album Proud to Commit Commercial Suicide. After this, the project was shelved as both members returned to their primary bands. In 2024, Nailbomb reunited with Max Cavalera leading a new lineup, performing live for the first time in 29 years.
Album Overview: Point Blank Released in 1994, Point Blank is the sole studio album by Nailbomb. The album is a brutal and confrontational fusion of thrash metal, industrial metal, and hardcore punk. The music is characterized by its raw, repetitive, and heavily distorted sound, featuring a mix of live drumming and drum machine samples. The album's lyrical themes are politically and socially charged, filled with a palpable sense of anger and aggression.
Point Blank is also known for its controversial album cover, a striking image of a Vietnamese woman with a U.S. soldier's gun to her head. The cover, along with song titles like "24 Hour Bullshit," "World of Shit," and "Religious Cancer," reflects the album's unapologetic and provocative nature. The album also features a number of samples from films and media, including Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and a GG Allin TV appearance, adding to its chaotic and visceral atmosphere.
The album's sound was groundbreaking for its time, laying a foundation for the industrial metal subgenre and influencing many bands that would follow. It remains a cult classic and is widely regarded as a high point in the careers of both Max Cavalera and Alex Newport.
