GREAT lost classic here, from 1968 - a much sought-after album lately and I can hear why! Nancy Priddy's "You've Come This Way Before" on the Dot label - a big-time sexy folk funk psych jazz RARITY from none other than Christina Applegate's MOM! That's right, I'd be cheating myself if I didn't tell you that Nancy Priddy is, in reality, Miss Applegate's mom, probably right before there WAS a Christina Applegate, back when Nancy was just a beautiful hippie folk pop singer. You can see where Christina got her looks from - Nancy's a stunner, that's for sure, a fact this album does NOT overlook, with the sexy come-hither look she's giving on the front cover, the super hot EXTREME CLOSE UP on the back cover, and the myriads of black and white suggestive shots on the inside gatefold, including the wonderful shot of Nancy chowing down on a banana that I just HAD to include as a second photo. Okay, so how does Christina's mom do musically? VERY well, actually - and while this album is sought after by DJs for its superb breaks, it's also an EXCELLENT pop psych album in its own right. The title track is GREAT classic moody popsike with sexy breathy vocals and some cool minor keys that make the chorus quite trippy, all driven along on an insistent guitar rhythm that mimics the pattern of the human heartbeat, much like the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band's "I Won't Hurt You". "Ebony Glass" is my favorite of the bunch - a sinister slice of eerie wickedness that builds up to a psychedelic miasma of sound. A creepy little piece about the coming apocalypse (or the birth of Christina), it's as unsettling as anything Ruth White ever cranked out, helped by the fact that there's some really creepy little kid vocals here. And little kids have always creeped me out ever since that one floated outside the window in the TV movie "Salem's Lot". Take this lyric, for example: "Ebony stars and ebony shade - this is the way the world was made. Ebony sounds and ebony grass, bursting into every gas." Followed by the evil little tyke adding "This is the way the world ends." At this point in the song, I find myself huddled under a table in the fetal position. "Mystic Lady" is great circular pop rock with harmony vocals on top of vocals, with a nice funky soulful feel, culminating in a HUGE gospel chorus ending. "My Friend Frank" has a GREAT fast fun jazzy shuffle rhythm that's tailor made for the dancefloor, with a groovy kind of lite soft pop Free Design feel. There's some positively FUNKY jazz bass and beats here, a nice fast groove - imagine Herbie Hancock sitting in with the Free Design and it might've sounded like this! "On the Other Side of the River" throws some early moog squiggles and squeals in to the psychedelic mix - a breezy upbeat pop song as performed by aliens. And hey, there's even a song on here called "Christina's World" - hmmm - how's THAT for some weird cosmic foreshadowing, considering Nancy's daughter wouldn't be born until late 1971!!!! So by now you know how absolutely GREAT this album is, and it would certainly be a classic for its music alone - but I should probably mention one more time just how HOT Nancy Priddy is. Click on that photo of her eating a banana again, then place a bid. She'd like to come to your house. Could you really say "no" to her? Original 1968 pressing on the US Dot label. Gatefold cover has some tape on seams, small filing sticker on front and spine, light ringwear, grades VG+. Vinyl plays EXCELLENT except for Side 2 Track 3 that has one of those annoying ruts where the needle gets stuck. Fortunately, it's one of the weakest tracks on the album.
