Brief Info: The third album by Scottish rockers Nazareth. It now bought them more to the attention of the record-buying public and was the first to chart. It included two hit singles in ‘Bad Bad Boy’ and ‘Broken Down Angel’. A band now in big demand and arguably their very best album. This the earliest copy you will ever find including the prized 1G / 1G codes and the rare Mooncrest promotional inner sleeve. This so early in fact, it only promotes two albums – this the very first album issued on it – this only with a select few very first pressings before the plain ones replaced it. A very clean copy that plays great as well, one I enjoyed immensely on play-grade.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: with most wear on the back bottom storage edge. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces, and somewhat prone to wear. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group with the original B&C distribution credits. Includes the rare Mooncrest promotional graphic inner sleeve which I have rarely seen before.

Cover Front: A very fine looking front with little wear, small corner tip rubs apart. Hardly creased with deep vibrant unfaded colour, any marks few and light with no sticker issues.

Cover Back: Even better if anything with any blemishes few and very light. The lack of ugly ring wear is a major plus on this dark cover.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The odd gentle surface crease apart, there is little else to fault inside.

Top Edges: Both straight and flat, any rubbing mostly patchy, little and light.

Bottom Edges: The front edge quite similar to above, the back has more moderate less patchy rubbing, this because it’s slightly proud of the front and such storage edges will invariably rub.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening little and light. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded near square, so the edges meet up very closely together and only very slightly not parallel. The text is unworn, the dark surface with minimal rubbing with most on the very ends.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs with very fine shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this clearly wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive, only lightly aged item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and a rare item for this new fledgling label. The only albums promoted on the new Mooncrest label are this album (CREST 1), the very first, and the more obscure Lighthouse album ‘Sunny Days’ (CREST 2). A lovely example of this unlined external flipbacked inner with its impressive large format logo as seen. A clean and fresh inner that is hardly creased with the wide recessed top opening that has only a tiny nick to the back edge. The light clue thick paper clean and fresh, all edges now solid and secure after a neat repair to the bottom edge that had a movement split and how registering little. If possible, I will always repair any inner edge splits to stop them potentially widening in future and this neat repair shows little. I have seen very few of these before and few new labels will promote so few albums. As-seen, this looks very attractive indeed and will not be seen often.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. An ultimate first pressing with only modestly light plays on all the evidence with any surface marks mostly very light, quite wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even register. Visually a fine looking record that plays great and should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb Nazareth album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this prized 1G/1G first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only modestly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this vintage Mooncrest record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and none can be earlier than this, it merits strong recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
