Faustino Oramas Osorio (4 June 1911 – 27 March 2007),  better known as El Guayabero, was a Cuban trova singer,  tres guitarist and composer.Most of his repertoire  consisted of sones and guaracha-sones, many with double  entendres in the lyrics. His composition "Candela" gained  international fame due to its inclusion in  the Buena Vista Social Club album.[2]
When he was 15 years old he began playing the maracas  as part of a septet of sones known as La Tropical  made up by some friends with the purpose of enjoying  and performing at the country dances. During the 1940s,  he began his career as composer with "Tumbaíto",  a song that was included in Libertad Lamarque's  repertoire and title he used as an alias for some  time. Afterwards, he composed two sones,  "Como vengo este año" and "El Guayabero".  He composed the latter when he was performing  as tres player in the Trovadores Holguineros  ensemble. Pacho Alonso, the well-known Cuban  musician, first heard the song and then recorded  it in a long-playing record that toured across  the world. Later on, the Orquesta Original de  Manzanillo used the refrain in a tribute to  Faustino who, since then, was known as "El Guayabero".
Skillful master of the double meaning, the Cuban's  idiosyncrasy, his ingenuity, witty remarks and his  love for highly erotic themes amusingly disguised  are some of his main features. Unlike most trovadors,  Oramas played sones rather than boleros, though this  was also true, to some extent, of the famous Trio Matamoros.  His preferred instrument was the tres, which is a  typical instrument of the son; most other trovadors  such as María Teresa Vera or Carlos Puebla played  the Spanish guitar. However, his backing groups  usually included a Spanish guitar in the basic rhythm.
He composed the song "Candela" of the Buena  Vista Social Club (1997) recording, which was a  worldwide hit. Wim Wenders directed a documentary  film of the musicians involved, Buena Vista Social  Club (1999) which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2000.
Compositions Oramas composed over fifty numbers. He mostly sang  his own compositions, which he could perform at any  length by adding or subtracting verses.  His signature number was "El Guayabero";  other popular numbers included "A María Elena",  "Como baila Marieta", "Compositor confundido",  "Contigo mi china", "El tumbaíto", "La triguenita",  "Las mujeres de Bayamo", "Los abuelos se rebelan",  "Mi son retosón". In most of these compositions the  rhythm and the poetical structure is rather similar.  Four-line verses are interspersed with two or four  repeating lines, and the whole or part may be repeated,  perhaps several times. The real content comes in the  language, which is amusing, human, topical,  sometimes vulgar, always entertaining.  Rather surprisingly, his work has not been analysed  by Cuban writers until recently, although he was well  known in the eastern provinces. Indeed, it is difficult  to find his name in the various histories  of the trovador movement.

Trovador popular, es reconocido como «el juglar mayor de Cuba» y alcanzó fama como «el rey del doble sentido» por su habilidad y gracia para hilvanar complejos relatos cantados en los que hacen gala el humor y la picardía. Desde 1938 adoptó el mote de «el Guayabero». En su honor se convoca hace varios años el concurso «Música con humor», a lo cual dedicó su vida profesional, con gran arraigo popular en toda la isla de Cuba. Su sentencia más usada era: «santa palabra».

Inició su carrera artística en el septeto La Tropical dirigido por Benigno Mesa. Posteriormente formó su propio grupo integrado por Santana Oramas Osorio, cantante y maracas, y Carmito Oramas Batista, bongó; más tarde se incorporó Misael Pino. Cultivó el son montuno tradicional. Su ritmo es sencillo, a base de tres, claves, maracas y su canto picaresco, lleno de doble sentido que, según él, lo pone el que escucha. Realizó giras por México, donde coincidió con el Festival Cervantino; y en España actuó con el rockero Santiago Auserón, cantante y líder de la banda Radio Futura, y en el café-concierto El Sol.
Afable siempre, el Guayabero gustaba vestir de traje blanco y un sombrero, también de ese color, que él mismo confeccionaba. Al igual que su cuerpo magro de carnes, así era de perfilado su rostro. De nariz y labios muy finos, se caracterizaba además por tener ojos penetrantes y un tartamudeo empedernido.
Según Pablo Milanés:
El Guayabero «es un genio popular cuyas características muy especiales dentro de la música popular cubana, no pueden clasificarse en una tendencia determinada. Creo que, desgraciadamente, no hay otro como él [...]. El Guayabero imprime una ternura especial como pocos, en tanto cultor de la picaresca. Él proyecta como nadie la cubanía de su verso y lo hace con bastante maestría.»
Para el tresero Pancho Amat:
«El Guayabero es un juglar popular que canta las anécdotas y sucesos de su entorno y de su tiempo, matizado por el gracejo cubano. Afianza su música en la tradición sonera, la llena de vida. Desde el punto de vista musical, puedo hablar del tresero. Él es un tresero popular de tumbas, que utiliza un diseño melódico rítmico muy reiterado, en cuya célula más elemental radica el sabor cubano. Lo he estudiado con detenimiento, porque a veces se producen cierres en la orquesta que me permiten arrancar con un tumbao que gusta a todo el mundo, le quito o le pongo algo más, pero me inspiro en Faustino Oramas. Sus tumbaos son complejos; para cada número tiene uno distinto, y cuando los tocas levantan la música. Cabe en su pequeño grupo, pero también en formato de orquesta. En cuanto a la rima, ha sido muy explotada en la música campesina y él la utiliza con acierto, incluso en aquella rima que no completa, pero que insinúa y usted le pone el doble sentido. Su mérito consiste en haber hallado su raíz, y en su virtuosismo al expresarla. Creo que todo tresero, debe conocer sus “tumbaos”.»

RECORDS (VINYL) GRADES :

SS (STILL SEALED) Sealed at factory and never opened. Disc is assumed to be undamaged and mint, but this cannot be proven until the album is actually opened and the disc examined.

M (MINT) Perfection, no flaws,defects, marks or otherwise indications of being handled or played. Any scuffs,hairline scratches or other marks disqualify discs from this category. I do not use this grade, as even the act of inserting the disc or removing it from the paper sleeve may cause scuff marks on the vinyl.

NM or M-(NEAR MINT or MINT MINUS) This is highest grade that I will assign to opened, handled records. The vinyl is virtually flawless, bright and shiny. A very minor, barely visible scuff or two may be permitted, but no scratched The disc should play with no audible noise. The label is bright, clean and unmarked.

EX or VG++ (EXCELLENT or VERY GOOD ++) Disc plays near perfectly, but may have minor paper scuffs that do not interfere with the sound quality. There can possibly be a hairline scratch or two but nothing that is obvious or affects play. Vinyl is bright and shiny; label is clean and unmarked.

VG+ (VERY GOOD PLUS) Some visible surface wear, very minor scratches and scuffs, but minimal impact on the sound quality. Vinyl will still have good luster; labels may have minor imperfections:(Slightly warped ,small labels or initials, etc.) but otherwise clean.

VG (VERY GOOD) Vinyl will have noticeable scratches or scuffs that cause minor surface noise, but power the music. There  will be no skips. Vinyl may appear somewhat dull and grayish. Labels may have small tears, tape marks,larger writing, etc. but still easily legible. slightly warped, There may be wear or deformation of the spindle hole.

G (GOOD) Well-played, dull, grayish vinyl with deeper scratches and wear causing distracting surface noise (hisses,pops, cracks and other nasties ). The record will still play through without any skips. Labels may be significantly defaced or damaged.

F (FAIR) P (POOR) Unless the record is particularly rare, I would not try to sell a record in this condition. There will be major noise, surface damage, deep scratches, and skips. Attempting to listen to these discs will be painful. These discs are basically trash unless a collector desires one to fill a space in a collection until a better one comes along. W writing on label, sticker or any remaining adhesive to the label.

ALBUM COVER GRADES

SS (STILL SEALED) Album is still in the factory-applied shrink-wrapping.

M (MINT) Absolutely perfect; no corner dings, marks, tears, dents, impressions from the disc, or other flaws.Cover should appear as if a record has never been inside.

NM or M-(NEAR MINT or MINT MINUS)Very minor signs of wear or cover impressions. Artwork is as close to perfection as possible.

EX or VG++ (EXCELLENT or VERY GOOD ++) Minor disc impression or slight corner creases, no wrinkles, puckers, seam splits or writing on the cover. Artwork is clean and unworn and there is no ink wear.

VG+(VERY GOOD PLUS) Cover is but may have minor writing or marks and may shows light wear. There may be just the of ring wear, where the area disc has created a raised on the cover that resulted in the ink wearing off the paper.There may be slight discoloration or staining, minor seam wear, but no splits or tears. Corners may have small creases or fraying.

VG (VERY GOOD) Covers are worn and used. Seams may be starting to split or may have been unobtrusively repaired with clear tape. PAPER COVER WITH BREAK DOWN AND FLAKED EDGES.(I use special archival-quality, non-yellowing, clear tape for all repairs.) There is moderate wear, but the artwork is still attractive. There may be yellowing or discoloration and there may be larger writing, labels, or marks. Corners may have damage or creases and there may be scratches or gouges that otherwise damage the artwork.

G (GOOD) Several (but not all of the following flaws will apply : Seam splits, marker writing, major seam splits,significant ring wear, damaged corners, tears, cuts, gouges, masking or duct tape seam repairs, or other flaws and damage. Again, probably only useful to fill a collection until something better can be found.

F (FAIR) P (POOR) Trash, usable only to keep the record off the floor. Writing on label, sticker or any remaining adhesive to the label.
