Brief Info: The third Neil Young album and one of the most treasured. Almost hard to believe it received somewhat mixed reviews on issue, but has long since been regarded as a classic. An album I seldom offer mainly due to pressing quality. This often has inherent pressing flaws and loud rasping noises and surface sound. This copy is not totally exempt with a tiny few gentle pressing sound traces on the title song, but overall this copy does play well, side two has little to fault as all and most songs are impressive. I think if I waited for a ‘perfect’ example, I probably would never offer this title at all. Side two has a couple of fine surface marks, but do nothing and both surfaces are clean and appearing little used. Not for audiophile purists, but many fans and collectors will like it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd, includes the polylined white inner sleeve and the large folded lyric insert sheet.

Cover Front: The spooky front graphic is impressive and clean with virtually any rubbing on the corner tips. Just one surface crease away from the edges and one very small, fine mark seen under light. No ring wear or sticker issues, any edge hairline creases few and light, this challenging dark, quite creepy front remains impressive as-seen.

Cover Back: The back even better with little to fault bar very small minor dinks on one corner tip (bottom left) and a trace on the left storage edge near the top. Clean and still fresh again, the lack of ring wear especially on this side is seldom avoided, but has here.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault on either surface, note the correct RSLP catalogue numbers on this one – later Kinney pressed covers look the same, but with the later number.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush with any wear minimal and light up to the ends which have rubbed a little – inbetween, hardly anything.

Bottom Edges: Again straight, any rubbing patchy and quite light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with any thickening quite light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The text mostly unworn and strong, it being well-centred as well. Any rubbing to spine surface little and light, mostly near the ends, even the folds have avoided it.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with fine to very fine shape retained with no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this wear-prone early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This still attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white inner that has modestly aged with some toning of the adhesive area seam edges. Some natural crinkle, but no hard creases. Both window circles crisp and neat with no tears, the polylining still clear and even quite fresh. No edge splits or repairs. This is UK Patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

The Lyric Sheet: EXCELLENT(++): a large, double-folded lyric insert sheet, printed one side only. Clean, still fresh with all folds strong with no splits or tears. Slight tone spot traces on the plain back side, this has no pin-holes or tape marks, hence unmounted (but it’s hardly a poster being honest). Folded very neatly as seen in my folded-up picture and hardly creased, all edges crisp and neat. This so often missing and seldom seen much better. Note: this was printed in England and also includes the RSLP 6383 catalogue number as seen in on my close-up picture.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT / VERY GOOD(++): arguably better. A fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with a couple of visible surface marks on side two that do nothing. Any others are light and faint as seen more critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light few register. Visually a fine record that should please many collectors – but not for highly discerning purists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant album plays mostly above it’s fine visual grading with little to fault – and certainly nothing major. Offering strong, mainly clear and fine sound. As stated above, a tiny few, gentle and light pressing sounds on the title song, but these are light and brief as they get. The odd light sporadic click here and there is very hard to avoid on what is largely an acoustic set. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, this is a well-recorded and produced set, but pressing quality seems variable and I reject probably four out of five I get the change to hear prior to purchase. Any surface sounds are light and infrequent, indeed side two plays very impressively with little unwanted at all, side one mostly the same and certainly no tracking issues*. It is quite likely few available copies will outperform this first RSLP pressing significantly I feel sure. I honestly do not think I have ever heard a ‘perfect’ first pressing of this album, but this gave a very fine account itself, or I simply would not offer it. So yes, the odd polite reminder of what is being played – a nearly 50-year-old record, but this one is way better pressed than most I have heard to date. It has been ages since I offered one of these at all. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic album. Not for audiophile purists, who only demand perfection, but this could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be recommended for those unconcerned with the odd gentle or light sound blemish here-and-there.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
