NEIL YOUNG Cowgirl In The Sand (Rare 1976 Canadian promotional 12" on the tan 'steamboat' Reprise label, pressed on translucent ORANGE vinyl & featuring the mammoth 10:01 Version, also including Southern Man).

Another one of Neil Young's most lasting compositions, "Cowgirl in the Sand" is a song that has graced Young's repertoire since its composition. Built on a simple minor to major chord progression (like "Down By the River"), it's a great platform for Young's most barbed guitar excursions. Lyrically, it takes aim at a promiscuous and possibly unobtainable girl, and the sense of regret and longing is tangible. A true classic, it was covered nicely on the Byrds' reunion album of 1973.

Taking on the topic of racism by evoking images of burning crosses, cotton fields, and colonial estates in the American South, Young was in for a surprise when Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd retaliated to "Southern Man" with their song "Sweet Home Alabama." In it they railed, "I hope Neil Young will remember, the Southern man don't need him around anymore." In truth, the bands were mutual admirers and a "reply song" is about the highest compliment one performer can pay to another. But Young's song also portended the bashing pre-grunge style for which he would become known on and off during his career with Crazy Horse. Nils Lofgren's persistent banging of the piano keys and Young's frantic guitar are the elements that send "Southern Man" into the rock & roll stratosphere, particularly during its long middle break and fade, which are the heart and soul of the song. The verse acts more like a hymn which rests in stark contrast to the instrumental goings-on; that's where the action is -- in the sound of what happens when people rise up and claim what is rightfully theirs.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER : This 12" single comes without any custom jacket (one was never produced), and will be shipped in a plain, generic, white cardboard cover; not separately graded but in a great condition overall.
