Label Conditions: Both immaculate as new: very clean and attractive with barely any spindle traces to be seen. The whole complete package for this album are practically as new and unusually, with sound quality to match.

Cat Number: K 54057.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 112 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Copies in this condition with a snowy white cover, both inserts and a barely played record are scarce. Not a major seller, examples like this are far harder to find than you would imagine.

Brief Info: Issued only a few months after the harrowing ‘Tonight’s the Night’, Young was back with Crazy Horse and another rock classic was born. Young admitted he made his best music with this band and the critics loved it. Surely another big seller?, but hardly, it failed to dent the Top 30 in the UK and clearly it would take time for the fans to return again. What they initially missed is a mini rock masterpiece which includes two stunning longer songs, in a similar vein to the two on his second album solo album.’Everybody Knows This is Nowhere’. ‘Danger Bird’ has the broody guitar sound back to its best and apparently Lou Reed said it was the best he had ever heard. This is even surpassed by the stunning ‘Cortex the Killer’, the centrepiece of the whole album, clocking in at 7.5 minutes and one of his finest songs to date. This is a superb copy with a that can justifiably be graded Mint (a word I use very infrequently because it’s still the most over-used and abused word in record selling). If any one has seen or owns this cover or its contents better, well love to see it/them. This set includes the original illustrated inner and the elusive lyric sheet. Most have one or both items missing and many examples offered are German pressed. This is UK through-and-through and this will delight most-all discerning Young collectors.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+

Cover Grade and Format: Mint, and it really is justified. An unlaminated single format with a very slightly less-than smooth surface. Printed and made in England by Shorewood Packaging and includes both inner and insert.

Cover Front: The only microscopic blemish, mentioned almost for the sake of it is a tiny tone spot near the bottom right corner, but look hard to see it. That is the only blemish I can see on this front that almost beggars belief. Stored inside a protective inner from day one, this will never be found better I feel certain. The whiteness is totally pristine and still snowy white with no yellowing, grubbiness or darkening at all. I can truly state, I have never seen a better example of a cover that does not age well. Not a rub mark or crease to be seen, this is worthy of a second or third look because they dont appear to often like this.

Cover Back: One hairline edge crease only and the top inside flipback impression is just (and I do mean just) visible through the card near the centre. All natural minuscule blemishes that cannot affect a Mint grading on a stunning cover. No ringmarks or record impressions and again pristine white - so white infact, you almost need shades.

Top & Bottom Edges: Unworn, dead straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Like wow, exactly as made and also gorgeous white with no toning. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square. All text is perfect and unworn, a spine of rare beauty on such a wear-prone white cover.

Corners: All four immaculate again with practically perfect shape retained.

Cover Summary: A truly AMAZING all round example of this very delicate 70’s cover, one that will prove close to impossible to find much better. This remarkable item should please all collectors even the most discerning connoisseurs reading this. Potentially the ultimate upgrade and back into the protective cover.

The Inner: Little short of Mint again. An unlined card inner with a shaped and recessed top entrance. The bottom corners are rounded and vented. Again snowy white and with barely a mark or blemish to be seen. All edge unsplit with NO repairs and with solid internal flipback construction. Any traces of creasing are so faint and mild I will not insult it by mention. Another integral part of this set in immaculate condition.

The Lyric Insert: Mint and printed on one side only. With one pristine manufactured fold, this also is snowy white and uncreased or aged at all. Totally immaculate and made on high-class, quality, lightly textured paper that even includes a watermark (seen under light). This has a ‘line-weave’ look, like quality ‘Conqueror’ paper and this would prove impossible to fake or reproduce authentically. A superb lyric sheet that again will prove impossible to find better. With razor-sharp edges and crispness that defies its great age, this is a joy to view and hold. Both these inserts are so often missing and never can I imagine them appearing better or like this again.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) or as close as they get. A tiny few, super-fine surface traces just visible when they catch angled light. The hard unlined card inner will rarely not leave a faint abrasion trace but again, try to find a cleaner example. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and fairly solidly pressed. A copy probably played once or twice most and quite honestly, it could almost pass for new again. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Young record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal and barely anthing even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this genuine UK pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Quite possibly the best all round copy you could ever with to see or own – do not lose this remarkable set.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
