How is it that I can offer an unplayed jazz album that’s been around for 60 years? Well, it was unearthed at the Hart record auction. For those of you who don’t know, Hart Callender ran a couple of St. Paul record stores until he was incapacitated in 1951. On his instructions, the entire inventory was locked up until his passing in 1996. The next year, the lot was sold to Smith Auction and went under the gavel. This record, along with about a quarter of a million others, traded hands that Labor Day weekend.
The one you’re looking at is called “Louis Armstrong Jazz Classics”, Brunswick #B-1016 ©1944. It consists of four (4) 10” diameter, 78 rpm records numbered 80059, 80060, 80061 and 80062. The sides are “Wild Man Blues” & “Melancholy” (with Johnny Dodd’s Black Bottom Stompers), “Georgia Bo Bo” & “Drop That Sack” (with Lill’s Hot Shots), “Static Strut” & “Stomp Off, Let’s Go!” (with Erskine Tate’s Vendome Orchestra) and “Terrible Blues” & “Santa Claus Blues” (with Red Onion Jazz Babies). The original 8-page libretto is included. The red velvet covered album folder has been exposed to a bit of water and is a bit weathered-looking around the edges (most visible on the back cover). Otherwise, pristine condition throughout. Remember, these are virginal, unplayed records.
